Huge news, John. President Biden just approved the largest expansion of background checks for gun purchases in decades. Now, thousands of gun sellers will need to register as licensed dealers who will be required to run criminal and mental health background checks on folks trying to buy guns. I’ve been pushing for policies like this for years, and I’m deeply grateful to the Biden administration for taking action. As someone who’s lost my son to gun violence, it means so much on a personal level to see our President be a leader in this movement. Right now, various loopholes allow around 20,000 gun dealers to operate without licenses or background checks. Closing these loopholes will go a long way towards keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous people like domestic abusers and felons. Make no mistake, John: this action from President Biden will save lives. Though it’s a long road ahead in the fight to end gun violence, days like today are chances to reflect on the progress we’ve made so far. Tomorrow, we’ll continue pushing for more federal reforms – like an assault weapons ban – that will make our communities safer from the threat of firearms.
