There is almost no other living species more dedicated to the success of our planet than our honey bees. These industrious little pollinators play a pivotal role in the health of our ecosystems by aiding in the pollination of plants, a fundamental process that supports our food supply and natural habitats.
Yet our honey bees are facing a grave concern: climate change is posing a significant threat to their colonies. It turns out an increasingly-long autumn season, which provides more time for bees to fly, is leading to exhaustion and jeopardizing their survival.
This spring is an essential time for the honey bees. During this time, new bees will be born and beekeepers will track their population. Last year, the United States lost an estimated 48.2% of our managed honey bee colonies. We hope this year will see improved numbers.
However, there is a glimmer of hope. Innovative climate adaptation measures, such as “cold storage” for hives during the colder months, have shown promise in preserving these essential bee populations. These methods are a beacon of hope for our bee friends, but this only underscores the broader importance of addressing the climate crisis head-on.
