Keeping you updated on the April 10th property tax deadline

At this difficult time, we know many property owners are stressed about the upcoming April 10 deadline to pay the second installment of California property taxes. Yesterday, Governor Newsom answered a question at his news conference about the possibility of an executive order to offer some relief to taxpayers facing that deadline.

HJTA has been leading the charge for property tax relief, as can be seen in this excerpt from another news story, this one reported by Politico:

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, which advocates for lower taxes on behalf of California residents, said it doesn't want a "mish-mash" of varying rules on property owners regarding penalty waivers. The best relief would be an executive order providing statewide clarity through June, HJTA President Jon Coupal said.

"We're not suggesting that the taxes not be paid," he said, adding that Newsom's remarks today were "ambiguous. He's leaving himself some wiggle room, but I'm heartened by the fact that this is clearly on his radar screen now. And he has certainly not slammed the door."

Gavin Newsom says he doesn't want to 'overpromise'

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday he’s in talks with local governments about property taxes due April 10 as the coronavirus pandemic bludgeons the economy, but cautioned that he does not want to “overpromise” relief for taxpayers.

Newsom acknowledged during a news conference Thursday that millions of California homeowners are anxious about paying their taxes next week.

“I deeply recognize that anxiety as someone… who pays those property taxes,” Newsom said. “We’re seeing if there’s ways to soften this… We’re going to see what our options are to help in this moment, but I don’t want to overpromise.”
