Dear
Friend,
Policy
has the power to change lives. As part of our commitment to
reproductive justice, URGE centers the most marginalized in our
society in policy proposals and community-based solutions — especially
young people, LGBTQIA+ folks, people of color, folks with low incomes,
sex workers, those experiencing homelessness or incarceration, and
people living with HIV. These communities will be heavily impacted by
the current COVID-19 pandemic. Our elected officials must understand
the importance of centering these groups in all policy
decisions.
But we can’t do it without you:
Contact
your legislators today and tell them that any legislation passed in
response to COVID-19 must center the needs of marginalized
communities!
As
legislation advances in response to COVID-19, URGE: Unite for
Reproductive & Gender Equity is continuing to roll out the
Young
People’s Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda (the Policy
Agenda), a grassroots
policy agenda with six policy sections:
- Real
Abortion Access
- Sexuality Education
- Democracy Reform
- Economic
Justice
- Decriminalize & Create Safe Communities
- Immigrant Justice
At URGE,
we recognize that without abortion access, there is no choice. We
pursue policies that end abortion stigma, bans, and restrictions;
decriminalize and demedicalize access to care; and change power
dynamics to support reproductive justice. Read more about Real Abortion Access here.
During
COVID-19, ensuring Real Abortion Access is critical. Recently,
lawmakers in Ohio, Texas, Alabama — three of our target states — as
well as Mississippi, Iowa, and Oklahoma tried to ban abortion by
labeling it “inessential” or medically unnecessary.
Let’s be clear: abortion care is essential health
care. Don’t let their attacks go unnoticed.
Until
then, please stay safe and do what you can to take care of others by
practicing social distancing.
In
Solidarity,
Preston Mitchum (He/Him)
