When we say the livelihoods of rural Americans hang on the whims of a few self-important elected officials, this is what we mean:
Affordable internet service for 23 million Americans will end on April 30th if congressional Republicans refuse to renew it.
The Affordable Connectivity Program lends a hand to 23 million people – about half of whom are military families and a quarter are seniors – who can't afford reliable internet service by themselves.
In the 1930's FDR made it clear that electricity was no longer a luxury, but a necessity, and now Biden is saying the same about high-speed internet: it isn't a luxury, it's an absolute necessity.
President Biden is right – everyone needs access to the internet. Especially for rural folks who rely on the internet for telehealth, schoolwork, job searches, and, not to mention, paying taxes, conducting business, and accessing banking services.
Congress could work with the president, approve emergency funding through the end of the year, develop a plan for a long-term funding solution, and keep this vital program alive.
This should be a no-brainer for every rural Republican in Congress because every rural American deserves access to affordable, reliable high-speed internet service.
But this Congress is overrun by MAGA extremists who obstruct, fearmonger, and mislead at all costs; only to leave rural economies, communities, and families behind.
The internet isn't a luxury, and rural voters know it.
