CHBA BC's New Home Breaks Ground
CHBA BC

CHBA BC is thrilled to announce it has secured a new home for its operations in the future! The association has purchased office space at Elmwood, a vibrant community hub in the transit-oriented development area of Burquitilam, set to be completed in 2027 by member, Marcon.

"This is a tremendous legacy that members across the province will value for generations. It represents a commitment to better serve our members throughout the province and the home building industry in the years ahead," said CHBA BC President Randy Chin.

The proximity to transit was a priority requirement as CHBA BC sought space that would meet the growing association's needs. "This purchase signifies a significant investment and milestone for CHBA BC," said CEO Neil Moody. "With a concerted emphasis on building more housing around transit-oriented developments, we are glad we can demonstrate our commitment as an association to this direction."

Steel Toe Boots Bursary Helps High School Students Explore Homebuilding Careers CHBA BC
CHBA BC

CHBA BC's Homebuilders Initiative wants to help empower career exploration for high school students while promoting safety in hands-on learning.

The goal of our bursary program is to remove financial barriers preventing students from actively participating in construction-related activities by providing them with essential safety gear, specifically steel toe boots.

These boots are not only a mandatory safety requirement on construction sites but also serve as a symbolic entry point into the world of construction careers.

High school students who express a genuine interest in exploring construction careers through vocational courses or workshops will be eligible to apply for the bursary. This program applies to co-op terms, spring break and summer break.

Okanagan College Discontinues Trades Program for Women
CASTANET

There was some disappointing news this week that after 16 years, Okanagan College is shutting down its Women in Trades classes after the program lost its funding from the provincial government.

Previously, women interested in trades were given a 12-week opportunity to test their skills in a variety of trades completely for free, allowing them to try new things before making any big money commitments.

In a statement, the provincial government said contracts expired and SkilledTradesBC ran a new procurement process to ensure fair access to compete for funding which will now be allocated to similar programs.
