John, Millions of Americans had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this week to gather and watch a full solar eclipse. Recognizing the educational opportunity to witness science and mathematics in real-time, many schools closed for the day or let students out early so they could watch the eclipse with their families. In a time when so many people with big megaphones look to divide us, this was a special moment for unity and reflection. For me, the reflection was about the wondrous nature of God's creation, and how vital it is that we all regulate our own humility with things that are larger than ourselves.
I was in Iowa last week to speak at an event hosted by the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics. One of the topics I spoke about there was the importance for leaders, especially those in the tech space, to have humility as they create the technologies of the future. You can read more about my remarks (here).

While we're on the topic of things that should bring us unity and positivity, I should mention that I spoke earlier this week about how important it is that we recognize the patriotic contributions of the election workers in America's states and territories. You can watch my remarks (here). |
These folks, with extremely few exceptions, are passionate about our democracy and work hard to make sure that voting is accessible and secure. Even in those very rare instances of voter irregularities, they're almost always an understandable mistake where someone got confused about the process and had no intention of breaking any laws. But if you listen to the naysayers and people who want to divide us, they make it sound like there is widespread fraud happening in our elections. In reality, it's exceedingly rare and Americans should have complete confidence in the way that elections are managed.
Our democracy is being tested right now, but it's stronger than many give it credit for being. It will be a long time before Americans gather again for a full solar eclipse. We need to seek out many and more frequent opportunities to come together rather than looking for opportunities to attack one another. Otherwise, how is constant bitterness and backbiting really serving us and helping ensure that we leave a stronger country for our children?
