I am elated to share today’s consequential action by the Biden-Harris Administration which will bring America as close as possible to universal background checks until Congress takes the necessary legislative action.

The Administration just announced a rule to ensure that tens of thousands of private gun sellers must conduct background checks that gaps in our laws – like the “gun show loophole” and “online sales loopholes,” have allowed them to circumvent. But with today’s announcement, these loopholes will finally be closed and countless lives will be saved. 

This rule marks the biggest expansion of Brady Background Checks since the Brady Bill was passed over 30 years ago and the closest Biden can bring us to universal background checks without Congressional action. Will you join me in sending our deepest thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration for their life-saving action today?

The original Brady Background Check Bill was passed in 1993 and despite an ever-changing world, the law was not updated until now. That left massive and growing gaps in the legislation that this new rule will address, including closing the “gun show loophole” and the “online sales loophole” which contribute to the approximately 1 in 5 guns being sold with no background check – a death sentence for countless Americans.

Now, thousands of previously unlicensed sellers will be required to become licensed and to conduct a Brady Background Check on firearm sales This rule will save lives by ensuring those who engage in the business of selling firearms are taking the necessary precautions we require of all other licensed gun sellers.

Friend, this is proof that our dedicated advocacy is working, that we do have the power to change this country for the better if we continue to advocate for the change that we know will save lives.
