Friend,
Two years ago, Republicans succeeded in their decades-long quest to overturn Roe v. Wade. The Dobbs decision paved the way for Republican states to deprive women of their right to make decisions about their bodies, including the critical right to have an abortion. This was a massive step backward.
But after the court’s ruling, Democrats in states like Connecticut spoke up and promised that abortion would remain legal here. Connecticut became a safe harbor for reproductive freedom, empowering those who were denied choice in their home states to come to Connecticut and seek the full spectrum of reproductive care. In other words, Dobbs was a disaster, but thankfully it had no impact on freedom here in Connecticut.
The latest Republican legal crusade is different. Now, Republicans are trying to limit women’s access to mifepristone, also known as the abortion pill, in all 50 states. The pill has been legal in the United States for nearly 20 years, and it’s among the safest drugs ever approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, it was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the United States last year.
Republicans are hoping the court will block the FDA’s current regulations, which allow patients to receive the drug through the mail and take the medication to induce an abortion through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
If Republicans succeed, access to mifepristone would be restricted across the country. Their latest legal strategy makes clear that Donald Trump’s party won’t rest until every American woman is deprived of the right to make her own decision about whether, and when, to have a child.
In this historic moment, I’m proud to be a member of the party that’s fighting to expand reproductive freedom and justice. With your financial support, I’ll continue working in Washington to protect access to abortion and limit the reach of the Supreme Court’s reckless jurisprudence. Can I count on you to have my back?
