More specifically, it would prohibit state and local authorities from sharing sensitive information with immigration agents, prevent ICE and CBP from entering non-public state and local property without a judicial warrant, and ensure people are given notice of their rights before being interviewed by ICE while in jail.
Why is it Important?
Right now, law enforcement can call ICE if they suspect someone is not a legal citizen, regardless of documentation explaining current status. This racial profiling has severe and permanent consequences, as detention and deportation result in family separation and breaking up communities.
The New York for All Act protects families and keeps workers in their jobs while making the whole state safer. Data shows localities that protect their communities from ICE have less crime. Our tax money should be spent on ensuring our communities thrive, NOT to fuel cruel anti-immigrant agendas.
