Friends,
In the middle of everything going on, I’m in awe of how much our community members have stepped up for each other in any way they can. Here in NY alone, we had over 76,000 healthcare professionals volunteer to help in our understaffed hospitals, many of them coming out of retirement to do so. St. John’s University donated nearly 200,000 medical supplies, including gloves, surgical masks, and face shields to one of our local hospitals.
We are all doing our part to help America stay safe, stay home, and flatten the curve. The 15.6 million restaurant workers, grocery store workers, and everyone who plays a role in the food supply chain are doing extraordinary work, along with postal and shipping workers, sanitation workers, and everyone who is keeping our systems running during this crisis. And as a mom, I’m grateful for the teachers who upended their lesson plans and are now teaching tens of millions of children virtually.
In Washington, we’ve taken some significant steps, but we must do more. In addition to the major relief act, I was proud to be part of the bipartisan push to move tax day to July 15 in order to give some relief to working families. (A number of states have followed suit in the past few days, so check with your state for the most recent information.) But we’re continuing to push the White House to provide essential assistance for vulnerable communities and to enable state governments to do the same.
ASPIRE’s mission is as always to support progressive candidates of color who will be strong advocates for our most vulnerable communities. We’re hard at work to ensure recently naturalized citizens are registered to vote.Twenty-three million new Americans will be eligible to vote in November, and we’re going to help make their voices heard.
