Senator Smith: “I Hope to Repeal an Arcane Law That Could Be Misused to Ban Abortion Nationwide”
[[link removed]]
A long discredited, arcane 150-year-old law is back in the news in 2024, and that should terrify anyone who supports reproductive freedom. Last week at the Supreme Court, the Comstock Act of 1873 was referenced on three separate occasions during oral arguments in a case dealing with access to mifepristone, one of two drugs typically used in medication abortions.
Minnesota Senator Tina Smith, a former Planned Parenthood executive, shares more about her intent to fight back by introducing legislation to take away the Comstock Act as a tool to limit reproductive freedom in this guest editorial in the New York Times.

Minnesota Bill Aimed at Preserving Black Families Would Now Cover Most of State’s Foster Kids
[[link removed]]
Since 2018, advocates for Black children and families and a succession of Minnesota lawmakers have fought for legislation that would correct one of the glaring disparities in the child welfare system: the disproportionate number of child maltreatment investigations, foster care removals and terminations of parental rights targeting African Americans.
“We deserve that opportunity to ensure that all of our communities that have been harmed by the United States have the opportunity to thrive,” said bill author, Representative Esther Agbaje. “The pain is real and palpable here, but part of the legislative process is to move it along so we can continue to have those conversations.”
After a hearing lasting more than an hour, Agbaje’s bill received unanimous support, and is now headed to the House judiciary committee. But the amended version goes well beyond the original intent of protecting Black children of African origin. The current version of the legislation broadens protections to all “African American and disproportionately represented children” — a group so large it encompasses nearly all children currently in foster care.

[[link removed]]
Depression, anxiety and other mental health issues are the most common complications during and after pregnancy, affecting an estimated 1 in 5 women. Yet, 75 percent of postpartum problems go untreated. The consequences can be devastating. Suicide and overdoses are leading causes of maternal death in the United States.
While medical science is focusing more on treating symptoms — the Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first-ever pill specifically aimed at postpartum depression — tough-it-out societal attitudes remain hard to shake.
For families and kids, finding ways to help new mothers navigate depression is critical but it’s still hard to get people to understand this isn’t just about feeling down for a day or two.
