Yesterday, I released a statement in response to the very disturbing comments my opponent Janelle Stelson made disparaging people of Asian descent. My statement is below. On live TV, Janelle made a joke that referenced Asian people eating cat tacos. It was a shocking and painful reminder of the insensitivity that has become far too commonplace in our national discourse. Something that MAGA Republicans like Scott Perry and Donald Trump far too often embrace.
You can listen to Janelle's comments HERE.
I know what it’s like to be called names and to have jokes made about you. As someone who came to this country when I was 13, I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of insensitive ‘jokes’ and comments.. That’s why I’m so grateful to be living the American Dream. After becoming a citizen and spending my career as an attorney for women and workers and now a Harrisburg City Councilwoman, I have the opportunity to continue my life of public service by running for Congress.
I’m running for Congress because the name calling and hurtful rhetoric needs to stop. Congressmen like Scott Perry are the problem and it’s going to take someone willing to stand up to him–and anyone else– and say enough is enough,
My campaign has never had the big wealthy donors that some of my opponents have. It does have supporters like you–who have continuously showed up and had my back.
I need your help again–can you support my campaign NOW with a contribution of $250, $100, $50 or whatever you can afford today?
WIth less than 2 weeks to go before the primary election, your support is more important than ever.
With gratitude,
Shamaine
My statement:
Janelle Stelson, a Republican until last year, has spent this Primary trying to convince Democratic voters that she shares our values. Clearly she does not. Her comments are too offensive for Howard Stern, and that says a lot. Obviously, Stelson owes an apology to the Asian community. She also owes an apology to all of the people of PA-10 who have welcomed her as a guest. While Janelle does not live in PA-10, as a candidate for Congress in this district and a resident and on air personality in neighboring Lancaster County, her comments paint an ugly picture that does not reflect the welcoming, caring community I’m proud to call my home.
After a career spent reading other people’s words off of a teleprompter, we see what Janelle has to say when she doesn’t have a script. Now we understand why Janelle’s campaign kept her away from the numerous debates and forums held throughout the district during this primary season.
