MJ’s NEW DOC, Deeper Than A Divide

We are very excited to announce that MediaJustice has produced its first documentary, premiering April 30th on YouTube! The COVID-19 pandemic exposed many systemic issues in the United States. When the world moved to online for remote work, virtual learning, and just about everything else in our lives, the Digital Divide became a gaping chasm for those unable to move their work and lives online. A team of MediaJustice staff traveled to Utica, Mississippi to interview community members directly experiencing the Digital Divide in the Black Rural South and collected their stories, photos, and video, culminating in our short documentary: Deeper Than A Divide. What did this community want to see in the state of Mississippi do with the federal broadband funds? Why do they believe communities in the Black Rural South experience such persistent disconnection and divestment?

MediaJustice went to Utica expecting to hear about the present experience and future hopes, but we learned about how important understanding the unique history of Utica and its relationship with technology was to telling the story of now and for the community to start telling shared stories of their hopes for a collective and connected future.

This short film hopes to bring you – in some small part – along with us on the journey we took, to hear from the community members in their own words, to learn what we learned about the incredible history and to join in a conversation about how all of our communities can manifest connected and collective futures, where we all can be free.
