John, today I want to talk about something deeply personal to me: the undeniable link between climate change and health.
You probably know me as a climate activist; otherwise, you wouldn't be here. But did you know I'm also a cancer survivor? Two years ago, I battled low-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma — a journey that brought me face-to-face with the stark realities of health and environmental crises.
During my chemotherapy, part of me hoped my hair would fall out. I had plans for the new real estate on my head — I was going to tattoo “CLIMATE EMERGENCY” on one side and “WAKE UP” on the other.
But this brings me to a question: Why isn't the entire cancer community — hospitals, research centers, and survivors — up in arms about what fossil fuels are doing to us? Not just to our families and friends, but to our planet and our future?
I’m sure you are aware that burning fossil fuels is primarily what’s driving the climate crisis. But the climate crisis itself threatens the health of billions of people worldwide.
Not only through extreme weather events, fires, and floods that claim lives but also via emerging viruses from ecosystem destruction and diseases carried by vectors like mosquitoes and ticks — which are expanding their territories due to warmer climates.
I recently read that the World Health Organization predicts the climate crisis will cause an additional quarter of a million deaths annually between 2030 and 2050 from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress alone.
Moreover, climate change displaces tens of millions of people every year, overwhelming our already stressed health systems. The link between our environment and human health has never been more apparent or more urgent.
Yet, there's hope. With the right tools and global cooperation, we can mitigate the health impacts of climate change. Local initiatives are making a difference, proving that collective action can lead to significant change.
This is the core of the Jane Fonda Climate PAC's mission: not just to fight the climate crisis, but to protect our future and our health by challenging the fossil fuel industry and electing leaders who will lead the way to a clean energy future.
Your support is crucial in this fight. If you're moved to act today, please consider donating any amount to Jane PAC. This will empower us to elect climate champions dedicated to prioritizing our health and our planet over corporate profits.
Together, we can face these challenges head-on and work towards a healthier, more sustainable world for all.
Onward,
Jane Fonda
