The U.S. has become the biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the world. That’s not something to brag about. These oil and gas export projects cause disastrous levels of fossil fuel pollution — including methane, the second-largest contributor to the climate crisis.

Increased LNG exports also have significant ramifications for environmental justice communities. These polluting projects are often proposed in communities that already bear the burden of heavy industry and are on the frontlines of the bigger hurricanes and storms strengthened by climate change.

Recently, the Biden administration paused new Department of Energy (DOE) approvals for proposed LNG export projects pending further reviews of the impacts on our climate and communities. This is a welcomed step in the right direction, and we need him to go even further.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, Republicans, and Big Oil want to undo any meaningful change toward curbing the climate crisis, including attacking the LNG export pause. We can’t let this happen. We need President Biden to strengthen the LNG export permitting pause and stand strong against any attempts to undo it.

Scientists are telling us we need an immediate end to all new fossil fuel approvals – including the overwhelming number of oil and gas export projects currently proposed for the Gulf Coast and other U.S. regions if we want to address the climate crisis. So, any attempts to undo the pause on LNG exports is unacceptable.

Tell President Biden to stand strong against attempts to undo the current pause on LNG export permits. Instead, go even further and ban all LNG exports now.
