Yesterday the Arizona Supreme Court upheld the state’s 1864 near-total
abortion ban — a law that was written before women could vote and before
Arizona was even a state.

Abortion Ban. Decision will put abortion front and center in 2024
presidential race in swing state

This is yet another devastating repercussion of the U.S. Supreme Court’s
2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which had previously nullified
these outdated, draconian state abortion laws by guaranteeing the right to
abortion at the federal level.

While this Arizona law would outlaw ALL abortions except those necessary
to save the life of a pregnant patient, my friend and Arizona’s Democratic
Attorney General Kris Mayes declared she will NOT enforce it: no patient
or doctor will be prosecuted by the AG’s office or any county attorney as
long as she’s in office.

That could all change if anti-abortion Republicans take power back in
November’s elections, and we know that far-right extremists are pushing
for similar bans not only in other states but at the federal level.

This news is a critical reminder of how important the role of the Attorney
General is in protecting the rights of the people. As California’s
Attorney General, I will ALWAYS defend the right to abortion and full
access to reproductive healthcare in our state and beyond.

Together, we must resist Republicans’ efforts to move us backward and turn
back the clock on our rights.

Thanks for all you do,

Rob
