Tax filing should not be an opportunity for profiting at the expense of the average taxpayer. Yet, the current state of tax preparation in the United States is far from this ideal. Major tax preparation companies, including TurboTax and H&R Block, have steered taxpayers away from free filing options, pushing them towards paid services many do not need.
The IRS's Direct File pilot program--which would make tax filing easier and more accessible--faces significant opposition from these industry giants. Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, has spent millions in lobbying to protect its market dominance and prevent the implementation of cost-free tax filing services. This opposition is not about improving taxpayer services but preserving profit margins at the public's expense.
A government-provided tax prep service could save taxpayers millions of dollars annually, eliminating the need to pay for basic filing services and reducing the risk of costly errors.

Jack, tax filing should be free, easy, and accessible to everyone. It's time to challenge and change a system that has long favored profit and complexity over clarity.

For too long, major tax preparation companies like TurboTax and H&R Block have manipulated the system to their advantage, steering taxpayers away from free filing options towards unnecessary paid services. This manipulation undermines public trust and points to the predatory nature of an industry that thrives on the confusion and complexity of tax filing.
The IRS has proposed a solution that could revolutionize tax filing for millions of Americans by offering a direct, cost-free filing option. The tax industry opposes these efforts because they care more about their profits than taxpayers and is spending millions to stop them.
A government-provided tax prep service could save taxpayers millions of dollars annually, eliminating the need for paid basic filing services and reducing the risk of costly errors. Everyone should have access to free and simple tax preparation--which would level the playing field and ensure fair treatment for all taxpayers. By removing the profit motive from tax prep, we can foster a system that prioritizes the needs of taxpayers over the interests of corporations, restoring trust in the tax filing process.
