Dear John,
Ever wondered about the reality of seeking asylum in America?
Meet Nuvia Garcia Vijil, who, at the age of 13, fled gang violence in Honduras with her mother, because staying would have meant losing her life.
Fast forward six years: with her asylum case still pending, Nuvia found herself at Northern Virginia Community College, where she met Sophia Sexton, an English professor, award-winning newspaper columnist, and former Afghan refugee.
Last month, Dr. Sexton recounted Nuvia's story in a four-part series titled, " Immigrant to Northern Virginia explains what it’s really like to cross the border [[link removed]] " as part of her "Journeys to NoVa" column that publishes regularly in Prince William Today, and online at InsideNoVa.com [[link removed]] . It's one of 15 columns shedding light on the experiences of immigrants in her community that Dr. Sexton has published since 2021.
