Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a great Easter and if you’re celebrating Eid or Passover, I’m wishing you a joy-filled holiday with loved ones ahead.

We’re back from our brief legislative recess, working hard to build on the good work we accomplished last year. I’m excited to share that leaders have agreed upon a supplemental budget framework that includes sorely needed funding to help improve our emergency medical system in Minnesota.

Budget targets

We’re also focusing on delivering solid policy that complements our 2023 budget and improves the lives of Minnesotans. On Monday, we passed the Elections Policy Bill [ [link removed] ], which focuses on improved voter access and election transparency. It targets policy areas where the state can improve voter turnout and ensure that if voting is restricted, voters have a means of redress.

Voters Rights

We also passed the Public Safety Policy Bill [ [link removed] ] on a unanimous vote. The bill continues our comprehensive approach to public safety and crime prevention with support for victims, criminal justice reform, policy modernization, and more.

Public safety

We also approved a higher education policy bill [ [link removed] ] that expands support in higher education for students who have a disability, an early education policy bill [ [link removed] ] focused on strengthening our pre-kindergarten and school readiness programs, and a transportation policy package [ [link removed] ] that improves roadway safety and Driver Vehicle Services wait times.

*Rosemount’s State of the City*

Yesterday I was honored to be a guest at Mayor Weisensel’s State of the City Address in Rosemount. Mayor Weisensel delivered a positive, forward looking update with the help of some special guests from Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan ISD #196 and the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

State of the city

The Mayor also mentioned how the investments we secured at the state level have directly impacted Rosemount and Dakota County. Rosemount received $1,143,588 million in public safety aid, which resulted in grants the Police Department is using for public safety initiatives such as recruitment and retention, equipment costs, mental health crisis responses, victim services, and first responder wellness and training programs.

Dakota County is investing more than $26 million in total county aid to our communities, as a result of the tax bill Democrats passed in 2023. Our state budget also dedicated $51 million for ISD #196 schools over the next two years, which will help lessen class sizes and get more academic and wellbeing support to students.

It’s truly an honor to partner with our community to get our residents the investments in a quality of life we all deserve.

*Honoring our Veterans*

Last week, we approved two policy bills supporting our Departments of Military Affairs [ [link removed] ] and Veterans Affairs [ [link removed] ], which passed with unanimous support. The legislation includes referral bonuses for the National Guard and adjustments to help the National Guard investigate and prosecute crime.

Veterans and supporters are invited to participate in the annual Veterans Day on the Hill, on Wednesday, April 17. Advocate for veterans’ issues, meet with legislators and attend the State Capitol rotunda rally. I hope to see you at the Capitol on April 17!
