John, you’ve probably seen a few emails from me on the secretive Article V plot to reshape our Constitution.
I’m writing you again today because I’m honestly worried at the sheer number of states introducing new bills, and how desperately lawmakers are rushing these bills through state legislatures.
We’ve barely made it into 2024, and we’ve already seen nearly 100 bills for Article V. This is painting a frightening picture of what we can expect from the rest of this year.
And all of these bills are moving through the state legislatures fast, with multiple states holding votes every week.
Here’s a reminder of what’s at stake: our right to peaceful protest, freedom of religion, our right to privacy – essentially the Bill of Rights.
I know how this might sound. Surely, the entire Bill of Rights can’t be at stake, right? Even though it may sound far-fetched, it is entirely possible. That’s because once enough states call for an Article V Convention, there are no rules governing what they can do – including putting our most sacred rights on the chopping block.
As I write, wealthy special interests are spending millions to pass Article V bills across the country. These same special interests will then be able to use their money to influence legislators if an Article V Convention is called, rewriting the Constitution to their own benefit.
If we’re going to stand a chance against all the new calls for Article V, we’re going to have to pull out all the stops. Only Common Cause can deliver the powerful, multi-state response needed to shut down Article V calls across the country.
