1) Chart of the Day: Trump’s THREAT of Tariffs Helped Control the Border
We at the Hotline are, of course, in favor of free trade. That being said, Trump’s threats of tariffs often had success in forcing other countries to do what is in American interests. One example of this tactic was when Trump threatened tariffs on European countries if they didn’t meet their NATO obligations. They paid up.

Another is when Mexico was not helping control the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump threatened Mexico City with “severe tariffs” and, sure enough, Mexico started cooperating. The chart below shows the policy — since abandoned by “open-borders” Joe — immediately paid off with large reductions in illegal crossings.

2) New ALEC “Rich States, Poor States” Rankings: Utah Is #1 Again! New York Dead Last!
This year's edition of the report by CTUP co-founders Moore and Laffer with ALEC Chief Economist and Executive VP Jonathan Williams has been released. Utah has been the #1 best economic climate for 16 straight years – but Idaho is right on its tail.

Look at the bluest and highest tax states in America: they are consistently the worst economic performers.

Here are the states with the best and the worst economic policies:

Congratulations to Utah on another top showing!

3) Hooray! JP Morgan's Jamie Dimon Fires Leftist Proxy Vote Advisers
Most major money management firms — which oversee trillions of dollars of Americans' pension and retirement assets — rely on the two big proxy advisory firms, ISS and Glass Lewis, in determining how to vote on shareholder resolutions. There's a big problem here. These firms give awful advice that is often contrary to these firms' fiduciary duty of earning a high return for their clients. For example, in CTUP's landmark Pension Politics ([link removed]) report card both ISS and Glass-Lewis received grades of F.

These firms should stop using ISS and Glass-Lewis because of their leftist bias.

Apparently, Jamie Dimon, the long-time CEO of JP Morgan, is taking this to heart. This week in his annual letter to shareholders he pledged to fire these “advisories.” He also said that shareholder meetings have become three-ring circuses:

One of the reasons it is less desirable to be a public company is because of the spiraling frivolousness of the annual shareholder meeting, which has devolved into mostly a showcase of grandstanding and competing special interest groups. . . .

While asset managers and institutional investors have a fiduciary responsibility to make their own decisions, it is increasingly clear that proxy advisors [ISS and Glass.-Lewis] have undue influence. . . .

Some [asset managers] have argued that it’s too hard and too expensive to review the large number of proxies and proxy proposals — this is both lazy and wrong. If issues are important to a company, they should be important to the shareholder — for the most part, only a handful of proposals are important to companies.

[link removed]
Dimon pledges that by the end of this year, JP Morgan’s asset management unit plans to eliminate third-party proxy advisor voting recommendations.

Our job at CTUP is to make sure every other major money management firm does the same so we can end the scourge of ESG anti-capitalism.

4) Congratulations Joe Biden: Your Antitrust Regulators Have Grounded an Airline and Thousands of Jobs
We warned ([link removed]) that if The Biden trustbusters blocked the merger of JetBlue and Spirit Airlines, Spirit would likely go out of business and their shareholders would get shafted. It sure looks like we were right. The Bidenites killed the merger – even though their combined market share would be less than 10%.

Now Spirit is predictably struggling:

Spirit Airlines is pushing back delivery of Airbus aircraft, prompting pilot furloughs later this year, as the airline looks to boost liquidity following its terminated merger with JetBlue last month...

The Miramar, Fla.-based company also intends to furlough about 260 pilots effective Sept. 1...

Spirit’s financial outlook has come into question over the last year against the backdrop of its terminated merger with JetBlue Airways. The airlines called off the deal after deciding they probably couldn’t overcome legal and regulatory hurdles, weeks after a judge ruled the $3.8 billion deal would reduce competition and harm cost-conscious fliers.

Some analysts have predicted Spirit could file for bankruptcy or liquidate in the coming years.

Who exactly is better off with Spirit potentially failing instead of merging? What in the world was Biden thinking?

5) European Court Declares "Climate Justice" a "Human Right"
This just in from our "Not a Parody" files:

The European Court of Human Rights has just ruled that the Swiss Government violated the human rights of its citizens by not doing enough to fight climate change.

[link removed]
"It is clear that future generations are likely to bear an increasingly severe burden of the consequences of present failures and omissions to combat climate change," said Court President Siofra O’Leary.

The verdicts cannot be appealed and come with fines that could force the Swiss to revise their emissions targets.

Climate activists are thrilled.

"The Swiss ruling sets a crucial legally binding precedent serving as a blueprint for how to successfully sue your own government over climate failures," said Ruth Delbaere, legal campaigns director for the climate activist group Avaaz.

[link removed]
This madness is coming to a city or town near you. Last August, a judge ruled that the state of Montana violated its constitution when it approved fossil fuel projects without taking climate change into account. Our Children's Trust, the environmental group behind the Montana lawsuit, has filed dozens of similar lawsuits in other states. Its executive director, Julia Olson, predicts: “More rulings like this will certainly come.”

We're worried that a parade of leftist Judges in the U.S. will begin legislating "climate justice" from the bench to stop global warming. They're coming for SUVs and air conditioners folks.
