The National Homelessness Law Center is proud to have helped deliver over 42 friend of the court briefs in the landmark case, Johnson v. Grants Pass. These briefs reflect support from more than 1,100 groups and public figures who join us in calling for protection under the U.S. Constitution of the rights of over 260,000 Americans who sleep outside every night.
This is the most important legal case regarding homelessness in the past 40 years. The Supreme Court will decide if cities and states that jail or ticket people who sleep outside when there is nowhere else to go violate the Eighth Amendment’s protections against cruel and unusual punishment.
The wide-ranging support we received from civil rights attorneys, homeless activists and service providers, human rights experts, faith-based groups, law enforcement associations, economists, public health experts, academic leaders, and Members of Congress underscores the need to solve homelessness with housing and support, not make homelessness worse by using jail cells and bulldozers.
