How to Make Great Decisions, Quickly - Harvard Business Review (No paywall) As a new leader, learning to make good decisions without hesitation and procrastination is a capability that can set you apart from your peers. While others vacillate on tricky choices, your team could be hitting deadlines and producing the type of results that deliver true value. That’s something that will get you — and them — noticed. Here are a few of a great decision: Great decisions are shaped by consideration of many different viewpoints. This doesn’t mean you should seek out everyone’s opinion. The right people with the relevant expertise need to clearly articulate their views to help you broaden your perspective and make the best choice. Great decisions are made as close as possible to the action. Remember that the most powerful people at your company are rarely on the ground doing the hands-on work. Seek input and guidance from team members who are closest to the action. Great decisions address the root cause, not just the symptoms. Although you may need to urgently address the symptoms, once this is done you should always develop a plan to fix the root cause, or else the problem is likely to repeat itself. Great decisions balance short-term and long-term value. Finding the right balance between short-term and long-term risks and considerations is key to unlocking true value. Great decisions are timely. If you consider all of the elements listed above, then it’s simply a matter of addressing each one with a heightened sense of urgency.

WorkEditor's Note: LeCun said it was working on AI "agents" that could, for instance, plan and book each step of a journey, from someone's office in Paris to another in New York, including getting to the airport. WorkAll aboard the Nvidia 'rocket ship': Executives are raking in company stock awards despite missing out on their bonuses for 2023 - Fortune (No paywall) Only Nvidia, the suddenly indispensable $2 trillion AI giant, could turn a missing C-suite bonus into a total nonissue. The dominant maker of semiconductor chips missed hitting financial goals in fiscal 2023 related to revenue and non-GAAP operating income, and executives didn’t make two key payout thresholds as a result, as corporate disclosures show the company paid zero cash bonuses in fiscal 2023 to its top team and certain performance-based equity awards failed to vest. However, the structure of the company’s equity program and its blockbuster performance have largely inoculated it from major talent defection.

WorkHow 2,000 elderly Swiss women won a landmark climate case KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz, a group of women climate activists all over the age of 64, initially brought the case against Switzerland in November 2016. After eight years of litigation, Tuesday’s ruling establishes a pathway for European citizens and civil society groups to successfully sue their countries for better climate policy. Editor's Note: "We are aware that older men, people with diseases as well as small children also suffer from heat waves and other climate effects," the group wrote on its website. "By focusing on the proven particular susceptibility of us older women we are simply enhancing our lawsuit's chances of success which is ultimately good for everyone." Work
WorkWorkPfizer's plot to win the RSV vaccine race The closely watched XBI biotech index closed at $90.40 yesterday, just 17 cents higher than back on Jan. 2. The XBI rose by as much as 14% back in February, driven by a series of acquisitions and a prevailing sense that more were in the cards. When those deals didn’t materialize, biotech gradually declined through March. Now, at the outset of the second quarter, it has entirely flattened.

WorkEditor's Note: Sciortino, who completed his PhD at MIT on tokamak nuclear projects, said Proxima will leverage what has been learned from the W7-X device, which has had more than 1 billion Euros in public investment. He added the projected timeline to get to fusion energy is by the mid-2030s. "We're looking at, give or take, 15 years. Building an intermediate device in Munich most likely by 2031 is our objective. If we manage to get to that then the middle of the 2030s is possible." Work

WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkEditor's Note: But like it or not, the dollar already plays such a big part in their economy that to some, the idea feels like a foregone conclusion. WorkJudge Blocks Trump’s Lawyers From Naming Witnesses in Documents Case The fight over the witnesses began in earnest in early February when Mr. Smith’s prosecutors asked Judge Cannon to reconsider a decision she had made allowing Mr. Trump to publicly name about 24 witnesses in court papers they had filed asking the government for additional discovery information. WorkEx-Assistant Principal at School Where 6-Year-Old Shot Teacher Is Indicted The former assistant principal, who resigned after the shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Va., is among several school employees listed as defendants in a lawsuit filed last year by the teacher, Abigail Zwerner, who was seriously injured on Jan. 6, 2023, when the boy pulled out the gun during the middle of an afternoon class, aimed it at her and fired. A single bullet passed through Ms. Zwerner’s hand and struck her chest. WorkFormer Trump Fund-Raiser Drops Suits Over Hack of Emails One of the lawsuits was against Kevin Chalker, a former C.I.A. officer who owns a New York-based technology security firm. Mr. Broidy had alleged that Mr. Chalker and his firm, Global Risk Advisors, orchestrated the email hack on behalf of the Qataris. WorkRev. Cecil Murray, Leader Amid Los Angeles Riots, Dies at 94 The church was among the most prominent in the city’s Black community, and Mr. Murray was among its most respected religious leaders. Tom Bradley, the city’s first Black mayor, was a member. Presidents, governors and world leaders visited the church, and Mr. Murray led the funeral services for Black celebrities like Mr. Bradley, Ray Charles and Eazy-E. WorkBill in Congress Would Force Action on U.S. Troops’ Blast Exposure The bill would also force the military to change how it designs new weapons. A number of heavy weapons now in wide use produce shock waves far more powerful than are considered safe under current military guidelines. The bill would require the military to modify some existing weapons to reduce the strength of their blasts, and take into account, for the first time, the need to minimize brain-damaging blast waves when acquiring new weapons. WorkWorkWorkWorkAbortion Jumps to the Center of Arizona’s Key 2024 Races The issue has emerged as one of the party’s strongest political weapons since the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, powering them to a series of electoral victories. The Arizona ruling on Tuesday will pose yet another test for Republicans, who after decades of efforts to limit abortion rights and access have struggled to find a winning message on the issue amid the transformed politics of the post-Roe era. WorkWorkWoman Sentenced to Month in Prison Over Theft of Ashley Biden’s Diary The sentencing of Ms. Harris reflects the seriousness of the government’s efforts to deter people from interfering in elections. That includes former President Donald J. Trump, who is awaiting federal trial in Washington on charges of trying to subvert the outcome of the 2020 race. WorkFood Aid Program for Mothers and Children Will Provide More Fruits and Vegetables Those updates align with findings from a survey released on Tuesday from the National WIC Association, a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of recipients. Of 22,000 participants in WIC, 93 percent said the cash voucher for fruit and vegetables was the top reason they enrolled and more than 90 percent said the value of those vouchers was just right or not enough. WorkMore Voters Shift to Republican Party, Closing Gap With Democrats The implications of the trend, which has also shown up in party registration data among newly registered voters, remains uncertain, as a voter’s party affiliation does not always predict who he or she will select in an election. But partisan affiliation patterns do offer clues to help understand how the shifting coalitions over the last quarter century have shaped recent political outcomes. During the Trump administration, the Democratic Party’s coalition grew, helping to bring about huge victories in the 2018 midterm elections and a victory for President Biden in 2020. WorkWorkF.A.A.
