“We’re talking about women dying… We’re talking about half the population not being able to make decisions when not even half of this body has a uterus.”
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe in June 2022, the then Republican-controlled State House and Senate began pursuing an abortion ban here in Pennsylvania. Republicans passed it in session on a Friday night, hoping Pennsylvanians wouldn’t notice.
But I was determined to bring attention to what they were doing in our General Assembly. I spoke on the House floor and took to social media platforms.
There is no surprise that in November 2022, Pennsylvania voters elected Democrats to take control of the State House and to make sure that our rights are protected. I am so proud and honored to be the first woman to serve as Speaker of the State House, and I am working hard to deliver for Pennsylvanians.
There is a saying that representation matters, and it does. There are so many times when we think of a position of power, we do not see women and we definitely do not see women of color.
