John, one of my proudest moments in Congress might not be one that you'd expect.

In 1987, at the beginning of my third term as representative, my office drafted and passed landmark legislation that banned smoking on short domestic flights. Two years later, this law applied to all domestic flights.

On its face, this may seem like a trivial thing to herald as one of my proudest moments, but it had significant personal meaning to me. When I was 14, I lost my dad to lung cancer. He was only 53. I knew that no family should have to experience the loss that we did.

Even if you weren't a smoker, studies pointed to the negative effects of secondhand smoke in confined spaces. I'm proud that my legislation began the movement to ban smoking in public places like hospitals, schools, and restaurants. The Big Tobacco industry fought us hard, but we won.

Throughout my career, I've put the well-being of folks in Illinois and across the country first. I know that this election is no different.

The way I see it, we have two choices: re-elect Joe Biden, one of the most effective presidents in modern history, and a Senate that supports his work; or put Donald Trump, who appeals to people's worst instincts, and a Senate chock-full of his puppets.

It's an easy answer for me, and I hope it is for you, too. But the reality is that 2024 will be one of the closest elections of our lives. We can't spare a single expense in protecting our Senate majority and the White House, so can I ask you to chip in any amount to help Democrats win up and down the ballot in November?
