Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Statement on Arizona Supreme Court Ruling Banning Nearly all Abortions

Access to abortion is essential to the health and well-being of individuals and communities and continues to be a priority for Los Angeles County.

Today, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled to deny women access to critical reproductive care and revert to a 160-year-old law that made performing an abortion a felony, punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs or helps a woman obtain an abortion.

This decision is unconscionable and directly threatens women?s health and freedom. The harms of restricting abortion access will always hurt the most vulnerable among us, disproportionately impacting those who face discrimination and are marginalized including people with low incomes; people of color; young people; people with disabilities; immigrants; people in rural communities; lesbian, bisexual, queer women, and transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex people.

Access to abortion is fundamental to the health of individuals, families, and communities. Los Angeles County and the state of California created the Abortion Safe Haven Project, consisting of a network of County agencies, community partners, businesses, reproductive health advocates, and health care providers committed to ensuring safe access to reproductive care for everyone in LA County and those coming to LA County.
