Road to Recovery

What to Know: Some economists say it could take years for the U.S. economy to recover from COVID-19.

The TPPF Take: Recovery will come soonest and most effectively when the private sector and government work together in partnership.

“We have developed a Workplace Recovery Act that would implement a national business-interruption insurance plan that can help solve the crisis which threatens the loss of millions of American workplaces,” says TPPF’s Rod Bordelon. “The intent is to keep businesses in business and employees employed.”

Bad Medicine in Mexico

What to Know: Experts predict that the coronavirus will soon overwhelm Mexico’s unprepared health system.

The TPPF Take: COVID-19 is yet another reason why a secure border matters.

“The raw numbers of supplies on hand suggest an impending humanitarian catastrophe,” says TPPF’s John Daniel Davidson. “Mexico’s unpreparedness, combined with woefully incomplete data about the extent of confirmed cases across the country, present real dangers to the United States, especially to communities along the southwest border.”

Reviving Federalism

What to Know: Perhaps the COVID-19 pandemic will revive interest federalism, the proper balance of powers between the states and the federal government.

The TPPF Take: Our big, beautiful nation is too large and too diverse for many one-size-fits-all solutions. That includes on health care.

“The principle of federalism, in fact, is all about limits — the limits to the federal government’s powers,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “This principle is more important now than ever before. The ruling is a check on liberal efforts to expand federal reach.”
