Governor Glenn Youngkin has vetoed 30 gun-related bills, including one banning the sale of assault-style weapons.

But it’s not just that veto that stands in the way of us protecting our communities. He vetoed bills that – based on data – would meaningfully reduce gun violence and the risk of gun violence across Virginia.

- Our legislature passed a bill that would impose civil penalties on someone who leaves a gun unattended and visible in a vehicle. He vetoed it.

- Our legislature voted to implement a five-day waiting period on gun purchases. He vetoed it.

- Our legislature voted to restrict the sale of certain large-capacity magazines. He vetoed it.

- Our legislature voted to prohibit the open carry of specific semi-automatic rifles and shotguns in certain public places. He vetoed it.

- Our legislature voted to create safe storage requirements for guns in homes with minors or individuals not legally allowed to possess firearms. He vetoed it.

He vetoed bills that would have made significant progress in protecting Virginians from gun violence, while protecting and promoting responsible gun ownership.

Every day, we grapple with the tragic consequences of gun violence. Communities are scarred, families are shattered, and too many lives are lost. But we are not powerless in the face of this crisis.

In Congress, I have tirelessly worked to find common ground on this issue and move common sense gun violence prevention legislation forward. I proudly stand as a cosponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban, which aims to reinstate the vital protections that were in place from 1994 to 2004, and I have twice voted in support of the Enhanced Background Checks Act. I also worked to move the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act forward — which President Biden signed into law as the first major gun violence prevention law in a generation.

Unlike Governor Youngkin, I will support gun violence prevention laws that keep our families, our children, and our law enforcement officers safe.
