John,
Today, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that the state’s 1864 near-total criminal abortion ban is enforceable. This law predates women’s suffrage, the Voting Rights Act, and even Arizona statehood. While it’s currently on hold, it will have devastating consequences upon taking effect.
It follows similar news out of Florida last week, where the state Supreme Court upheld a six week ban. Both laws threaten doctors with criminal punishment, and both will put abortion out of reach for millions of people.
Our ‘Care Is Not Criminal’ campaign directly responds to these attacks by supporting pro-choice candidates for criminal legal positions who will leverage the power of their office to block the investigation of abortion care at the state and community level.
This fall, voters in Arizona and Florida, as well as states across the country, will have the opportunity to leverage their power not only through pro-choice ballot initiatives, but also by ensuring that EVERY candidate they vote for is ready to protect patients and healthcare providers.
Every judge, prosecutor, and district attorney impacts whether an abortion provider or patient may be investigated—and every election is an opportunity to elect a pro-choice champion who will fight to protect our rights, families, and futures.
Thank you for your support,
