Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the SEED you plant

SPRING Appeal

Dear
SPUC supporter,
Robert Louis Stevenson (author of Treasure Island) famously once said:

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the SEED you plant."

Well, thanks to your kind financial help, SPUC is busy cultivating a new generation of pro-life activists to ensure the UK pro-life movement’s future.

Several youth development projects stand out:

1. Youth Conference

SPUC has been running youth conferences since the 1990s.

This year’s conference at Stone in Staffordshire in February sold out in record time.

(Sadly, this meant having to turn some people away. Next year, funding permitting, I would like to significantly increase capacity)
* More than 200 young people aged between 16-35 attended

Several Manchester University students were at the conference, which took place just days before they experienced disturbing scenes which engulfed their university Pro-life Society.
* Well over half of the attendees were first-timers which indicates to me not only the hunger for justice for the unborn that exists among young people today but also their desire to be part of the vanguard that delivers it

They heard from a host of expert pro-life speakers including, Dr Miriam Sciberras, Chief Executive Officer of Life Network Foundation Malta
Alongside Andorra, Malta has the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe, and Dr Sciberras (above) is bravely resisting international pressure to liberalise them.

In addition, delegates heard from SPUC’s Services Coordinator, Margaret Akers, who laid out the spectacular failures of the UK’s “pills by post” policy and provided practical steps to help end this policy.
I could fill this email with dozens of quotes from delighted young delegates, but a picture is worth a thousand words, and I feel the photo montage (below) expresses best how the conference inspired them:
Building this level of enthusiasm, of course, comes at a cost.

To encourage participation, admission prices are heavily subsidised.
* SPUC branches help by sponsoring some of the delegates and covering their travel costs
* A professional film crew was hired too (£3,000) with the video footage to be used in SPUC’s school outreach programme for the further benefit of young people

2. Project Truth

Project Truth is the UK's largest pro-life youth outreach initiative.
It is all about bringing the truth to the streets, a truth which is so often hidden because of the contentious nature of the abortion issue.

Its focus is on starting conversations about abortion with the public.

The project’s goal is to change hearts and minds one conversation at a time by breaking the silence surrounding abortion with positive discussions.

In addition, information is handed out on the:
* Development of unborn babies in the womb
* Crisis pregnancy help
* Support for women (and men) struggling after an abortion

Project Truth celebrates ten years of life-saving activity

To mark this important milestone, we will soon be launching the Project Truth Alumni.

The alumni will offer hundreds of past members of the team from the UK and Ireland a chance to catch up with old friends and renew their involvement in the pro-life cause.
* Alumni include several doctors, lawyers, teachers, journalists and religious, so people who still have a big part to play in saving babies.

* A dinner will be held in Glasgow on 25^th May to launch the Alumni,

Owen Roberts is one of the lead organisers of the Project Truth Alumni Network.

Owen told me:

“We aim to present our new “Alumni Network”, which will run ongoing projects throughout the year and optimised for members to be most active where they can be most effective.

Grouped into several categories (e.g. Education, Politics, Arts/Creative etc.) the network will be made up of these sub-units that are led and run by members to focus their efforts where they can see maximum reward.”

I would like to have an Alumni officer in place in time for the launch dinner.

A SPUC donor has kindly agreed to fund HALF of the cost of employing the new officer.

But SPUC must find £15,000 to match that.

I hope you can see how SPUC is planting the “seeds” for success today so we can reap a great harvest tomorrow.

SPUC’s goal is to make abortion unthinkable.

But that goal will only be achieved if our young people are motivated, dedicated, and informed.

That is why SPUC’s youth work is vital and why I need your financial assistance to ensure that it continues to thrive.

Will you give £10 or £20 or £50 or £100 or £500 or £1,000 or £5,000 or more to build a strong, vibrant and victorious pro-life movement for tomorrow?

Thank you for all you do to build a future free from the horror of abortion

Yours in Defence of Life
John Deighan
Chief Executive
