Will Prosecuting Trump Backfire?

Hillary Clinton outlines Biden strategy to politicize Trump’s politicized indictments. Will it backfire?

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appearing on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon said “It’s kind of like one is old and effective and compassionate, has a heart, and really cares about people, and one is old and has been charged with 91 felonies.…I don’t understand why this is even a hard choice.” Here, she is openly using multiple indictments by federal, state and local Democratic prosecutors against former President Donald Trump as a political cudgel. The message the American people is clear: The Democratic Party-controlled justice system is prosecuting Trump, the leader of the opposition party, in an election year to damage him politically and make the incumbent President Joe Biden more electable. The only risk is that, with Trump leading the polls, it appears to be backfiring, making Biden appear to be tyrannical in a bid to solidify one-party rule by imprisoning his opponent in an unprecedented attempt to influence the election — and the only countermeasure available to the American people if they disagree might be to vote for Trump.

“It’s kind of like one is old and effective and compassionate, has a heart, and really cares about people, and one is old and has been charged with 91 felonies.…I don’t understand why this is even a hard choice.”

That was former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appearing on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, openly using as a Democratic Party campaign strategy multiple indictments by federal, state and local Democratic prosecutors against former President Donald Trump.

The message the American people is clear: The Democratic Party-controlled justice system is prosecuting Trump, the leader of the opposition party, in an election year to damage him politically and make the incumbent President Joe Biden more electable.

Democrats are telling the American people Trump is bad, with Clinton flummoxed that anyone might still vote for him. In fact, Trump has been consistently leading both the two-way race and five-way race national poll averages compiled by Real Clear Polling.

All the while, polls taken to influence public opinion as much as measure it have repeatedly reported independents would be less likely to support Trump if he is convicted — which adds urgency to the criminal trials being brought by Democrats in Washington, D.C., Miami, Fla., Fulton County, Ga. and New York City.

The episode is reminiscent of 2016, when the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation of Trump and his campaign on false charges that Trump was a Russian agent Clinton’s campaign had concocted was used as a talking point by Democrats in the election, and then turned into a legal battering ram against the Trump administration after he won the election.

The reason for the feeding the bogus story to the Justice Department — learned later in the investigation of the investigation by former Special Counsel John Durham — was because Trump’s opponent, Clinton, had an FBI investigation of her own to contend with over her mishandling of classified information by running a server out of her private residence that included her classified email correspondence.

And so, it was a way of evening the odds both electorally and, later, of settling a political score after the election.

Naturally, given the success in hampering the Trump administration with an investigation that should have never happened in the first place, with virtually no punishment or consequence that makes any sense given the gravity, the lawfare strategy has escalated to preemptive criminal trials designed to create a basis for disqualifying Trump from the ballot by states—a maneuver that failed after the Supreme Court struck it down.

The only risk is that, with Trump leading the polls, it appears to be backfiring, making Biden appear to be tyrannical in a bid to solidify one-party rule by imprisoning his opponent.

In short, they’re doing it again, except, this time more publicly in an unprecedented attempt to influence the election — and the only countermeasure available to the American people if they disagree might be to vote for Trump. Time will tell if that is enough to stop the cycle of reprisals — or if that just makes it worse.
