John, I believe the way we treat our teachers, EMTs, law enforcement officers, and firefighters reveals our state’s fundamental values. That’s why I was proud to co-sponsor the bi-partisan HELPER Act in the Senate to assist essential workers here in Maine access affordable housing. There is much more to do to fully realize that goal, but I need your help.

As you may know, I’m up for re-election in November. We need to spread the word and turn out voters in order to continue making a difference for Maine people, and measures like the HELPER Act really put in perspective what’s on the line. The HELPER Act would create a no-down payment first-time homebuyer loan program for law enforcement officers, firefighters, medical first responders, and teachers who haven’t owned a home for the past three years.

With soaring prices across the housing market, many folks in professions we depend on can’t afford to live in the communities they serve. I think that’s a real shame, and it also contributes to worker shortages in these fields that impact everyone.

To be clear, John – the HELPER Act isn’t going to fix the housing situation overnight. But if we lower the barrier of entry for our workforce to buy a home, we can begin to address the affordability issue by supporting the Maine people and Americans serving their communities.

We have an uphill climb ahead of us to take on the housing shortage and costs in Maine. Measures like the HELPER Act won’t completely solve the issue, but it is an important step in the right direction.
