John,
“Why did you choose Dallas?”
Ground Game’s biggest investment in Texas politics this year is in Dallas, Texas, where we are running a petition campaign with dozens of organizers to put marijuana decriminalization on the November 2024 ballot.
We’ve had community organizations and philanthropic organizations ask how we chose Dallas as a focus. And this is one of the most important questions for an organization like ours.
The short answer: Dallas represents a tremendous opportunity to advance social justice goals and dramatically increase voter turnout.
John, before Ground Game considered a petition campaign in Dallas, community groups like our partners Texas Organizing Project and Dallas Action spent years organizing to reform local marijuana enforcement programs. They see our ballot measure campaign as a continuation of the work they’ve led — and as an innovative tactic that will win public support for criminal justice reform while boosting civic engagement.
It’s the synergy between longstanding Dallas organizing and our ballot measure that presents such an opportunity this fall. With one election, we can keep people out of jail, save millions in public spending, and give tens of thousands of otherwise-unlikely voters a reason to vote this November.
Organizing for a better future,
Ground Game Texas
