This week we’re releasing our annual report and we have some important recommendations for those in power.

Dear Friend,

Artificial Intelligence could play a major role in the next general election. We’ve already seen ‘deepfake’ audio and AI-generated images spreading online.

This year’s Full Fact report—released today—focuses on what those in power need to be doing now to make sure our democracy is robust in the face of this rapidly evolving technology.

Full Fact is calling for those in power to do three things to make sure our democracy is ‘future-proofed’ in the face of AI-generated bad information.
1. Change the law to make it easier to tackle bad information online. Especially relating to health or AI-generated content.
2. Strengthen Ofcom’s oversight of online platform and search engine policies on generative AI and content.
3. Create a nation of savvy online users by increasing resources for media literacy now and in the future.

The next general election will be an important time for voters and those seeking their votes to express ideas about the future freely.

If using generative AI to do this, transparency from parties and campaigners will be key to ensuring harm is reduced and important freedoms are protected.
Best wishes,

Craig, Digital Campaigns Manager—Full Fact

** Has Sir Keir Starmer called for more houses to be built for asylum seekers and ‘illegal immigrants’? ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
In a post that first circulated on social media over a year ago, a user claims that “Keir Starmer calls for ‘more houses to be built’ for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants - ‘These migrants have to be the priority for the government. They are the future of our economy’ he said”.

The original post includes a link to an interview Mr Starmer gave to BBC News in November 2022. But Mr. Starmer did not say this during the interview, and we’ve found no evidence that he’s called for “more houses to be built” for asylum seekers and ‘illegal immigrants’, or made comments to this effect.

** Full Fact concerned about Conservative leaflet in London mayoral race ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
We’ve mentioned previously that Full Fact thinks that deceptive campaign formats risk misleading the public during elections. Last week a supporter sent us a copy of a leaflet being distributed by the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen political parties use these tactics. Earlier in the year, we fact-checked a Lib Dem leaflet ([link removed]) that misleadingly attributed a supportive quote to the Guardian.

Ahead of the general election, political parties across the spectrum should avoid using tactics that could mislead the public.

** Image of Israeli Prime Minister on ventilator is fake ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
An image supposedly showing Benjamin Netanyahu on a ventilator in a hospital bed was almost certainly created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The image claiming to show him breathing through a ventilator is not genuine. It has been circulating since at least November 2023, when it was shared widely on TikTok with false claims that it showed Mr Netanyahu in intensive care.
