Whats behind extreme psychological reactions to eclipses? - National Geographic Premium (No paywall) Now 33 years later, Makepeace is one of the world’s most well-known eclipse chasers and has seen 17 total solar eclipses around the world, on all seven continents, from Libya to Antarctica to Tidore Island in eastern Indonesia. A filmmaker by trade, he shares his eclipse reports and videos as The Eclipse Guy, and his ruminations of what it all means as a public speaker.
Each eclipse feels as intense as the last, he says. “Nothing extraterrestrial, but a firehose to the face of your fundamental humanity. Emotions are high; tears fall; you’ll think: ‘That was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen and I’m not sure what happened to me, but it meant something.’”

WorkThe time has come for over-the-counter antidepressants Anyone can now walk into a pharmacy in the United States and buy oral contraceptives over the counter without a prescription, thanks to the FDA’s approval of norgestrel (Opill). This change reflects the drug’s safety and the public health imperative to ensure wider access to birth control. But another safe class of medicine that addresses a massive public health need remains unavailable except by prescription: the antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). WorkMedicaid redetermination cost community health centers an average of $600K each It’s been a year since states began the process of Medicaid redetermination, going through their Medicaid rolls that had been frozen through the Covid-19 emergency period. According to data from KFF, about 21% of the people who were enrolled prior to the redetermination, or close to 20 million, lost coverage, while 45%, or 42 million, were confirmed. For the remaining 31 million people, renewal of coverage is still pending.

WorkWorkPence Attacks Trump’s Abortion Statement as a ‘Slap in the Face’ “However much our Republican nominee or other candidates seek to marginalize the cause of life,” Mr. Pence said Monday, “I know pro-life Americans will never relent until we see the sanctity of life restored to the center of American law in every state in this country.”

WorkWorkWorkAmericans converge on the path of totality to experience the solar eclipse Today marks a total solar eclipse that is expected to cross the United States as millions of Americans try to position themselves in the path of totality to capture this celestial moment. The next time an eclipse of this magnitude will cross the U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044. Towns in the path of totality are preparing for an influx of people vying for the ultimate viewing experience and providing an economic boon. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkUSD/JPY Forecast – US Dollar Continues to Pressure Yen And at that point in time, I would anticipate that the US dollar could go looking to the 100 to 55 yen level, which of course is a large round figure, and then possibly beyond that. The Federal Reserve may cut rates later this year, but at this point in time, a lot of traders are starting to dial back on expectations of cuts, at least in frequency and size. And that of course continues to keep the US dollar strong. WorkWorkWorkOn Abortion, Trump Chose Politics Over Principles. Will It Matter? In his four-minute video statement on Monday, Mr. Trump said that states and their voters should decide abortion policies for themselves, in language that sounded like a free-for-all to the staunchest abortion opponents. He backed access to fertility treatments such as I.V.F., and supported exceptions to abortion bans in cases of rape, incest and the life of the mother. WorkWorkWorkWorkCol. Ralph Puckett Jr., Belated Medal of Honor Winner, Dies at 97 In April 2023, President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea awarded his country’s highest decoration for bravery, the Taegeuk Order of Military Merit, to Colonel Puckett and two other veterans of the Korean War (one honored posthumously) on a state visit to Washington marking the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-South Korea bilateral alliance. WorkFrance Bracing for Cyberattacks During Summer Olympics Mr. Strubel said the Paris opening ceremony could also be a target of a cyberattack by a state actor. He did not name a country, but President Emmanuel Macron of France said he had “no doubt whatsoever” that Russia would try to target the Paris Olympics. He did not provide any details. WorkMan Kills 2, Then Himself, at Las Vegas Law Office Sheriff McMahill said he did not know the motive for the shooting and could not say what connection there was between the gunman and the victims or whether they worked at the firm, which he did not name. Their names were not released. WorkPutting Abortion Question to Florida Voters is Unlikely to End Court Fights Anti-abortion activists have promoted the fetal personhood legal strategy since the U.S. Supreme Court eliminated the federal right to abortion in 2022. What has been perhaps their biggest success came in February, when the Alabama Supreme Court held that a frozen embryo should be considered a person, opening a new front in the legal debate over abortion. WorkWorkWorkWorkHow Abortion, and I.V.F., Flipped an Alabama State House Seat “I’ve heard it said that there are these arcs in history and these places are where the pendulum swings,” Ms. Lands said in an interview at her home in Huntsville, which for the last three months served as the headquarters of her campaign’s canvassing operation. “And so I hope that’s where we’re at — that it’s beginning to tilt. Not necessarily so much in the other direction, but just back toward balance.” WorkTrump Says Abortion Restrictions Should Be Left to the States Mr. Trump, who has been trying to balance his desire to please the conservative base with his attempts to avoid alienating swing voters, faced blowback after The New York Times reported in February that he had said privately that he liked the idea of a 16-week national ban. He then talked about such a ban publicly, and the backlash continued. So Mr. Trump’s advisers tried to find a way for him to avoid a more specific position at a time when Republicans across the country are struggling with how to address abortion.
