Dear john,
As Congress left Washington for the Easter recess, I traveled across Texas's 28th Congressional District to meet with local officials and constituents during the last two weeks.
I started the week in Pleasanton, where I attended the Pleasanton Fuel Farm Groundbreaking Ceremony. I want to thank the Mayor of Pleasanton, Clinton Powell, and the Pleasanton City Council for their leadership in utilizing federal funding opportunities that promote growth and economic stability for our community.
Later in the week, I was in Laredo to attend the groundbreaking ceremony to expand State Highway 359. $38 million for the project comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which I helped pass in 2021. This project will improve traffic and safety as well as promote economic growth in South Texas communities, and is proof the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is delivering for South Texas!
I also was able to visit San Antonio, where I celebrated a $2,280,000 earmark I secured for the Knowledge is Power Project. Thank you to State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins for working with me to support South Texas kids.
As always, if you need help with a federal agency, please contact one of my offices: - Washington, DC: (202) 225-1640
- Laredo: (956) 725-0639
- San Antonio: (210) 271-2851
- Rio Grande City: (956) 487-5603
Sincerely,

This weekend, I joined State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins and local leaders in San Antonio's East Side to celebrate the Knowledge is Power Project.
The project was made possible by $2,280,000 in Community Project Funding that I secured in last year.
The Knowledge is Power project provides K-12 students with after-school resources to succeed in school, available across 10 East Side churches.

It was a pleasure to attend the groundbreaking ceremony to expand State Highway 359 in Laredo! $38 million for the project comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which I helped pass in 2021. This project will widen State Highway 359 and help improve traffic and safety while encouraging further economic development.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is delivering for South Texas!
As Laredo continues to grow, securing robust federal transportation funding for South Texas remains a top priority of mine in Congress.

Last week, I announced that Aaron Fuentes, a Laredo student, was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
He will attend on a full-tuition scholarship valued at over $225,000.
Aaron’s exemplary qualifications make him an ideal candidate and one I trust will make South Texas proud as he serves our nation.

I joined local leaders in Atascosa County to celebrate the groundbreaking of Pleasanton Municipal Airport’s new fuel farm. The project was made possible by $600,000 in federal funds and a local match of $380,801.
In Congress, I will continue to support infrastructure that is vital to the economic growth of South Texas!

Congratulations to Mateo Hernández, winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge, and Victoria Tran, first runner-up!
A student at John B. Alexander High School, Mateo created “HealthDetective,” a comprehensive mobile application that helps users effectively manage a wide range of health problems, illnesses, and diseases.
I admire the effort and creativity Mateo put forth in this competition. I know he will represent South Texas very well in Washington.

I joined John Roberts on America Reports, where we discussed the crisis at the border. I also urged my colleagues to work in a bipartisan way to pass sensible border legislation.
In Congress, I will continue to advocate for strong border security while respecting immigrant rights and values.

For those of us who live at the border, Border Patrol checkpoints are a common occurrence. Traffic at Laredo's Checkpoint 29 on I-35 can sometimes stretch 1.6 miles.
As the top Democrat overseeing the Department of Homeland Security’s budget, I worked to address this concern for my constituents during this year's government funding process.
I secured $15 million in federal dollars to expand Border Patrol Checkpoint 29 in Laredo on Interstate 35, a frequent point of traffic delays.
I will continue to fight for stronger international commerce, improving public safety, and reducing drug and human trafficking in South Texas.

I am fighting every day to secure the border.
As the top Democrat overseeing the Homeland Security Department’s budget, I secured record funding for strong border security measures that support our frontline Border Patrol Agents and CBP Officers.
We must have strong border security while still respecting immigrant rights and values.

As a former college professor, I understand the important role that higher education plays in a young person's career.
I am pleased to have secured federal funding for programs that expand access to educational and job opportunities for students - particularly those at Hispanic-serving institutions in South Texas.
These investments will ensure that our students have the necessary resources to graduate, find a good-paying job, and lead meaningful lives.

A quality education is necessary for our children to succeed in the 21st Century. The Knowledge is Power project will ensure East Side students are supported and have the after-school resources they need to perform well in the classroom.
I secured these Community Project Funding dollars in FY23 to deliver for San Antonio’s East Side, and we are seeing the results of that today.
Thank you to State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins and Dr. Raymond Bryant for working with me to bring the Knowledge is Power project to fruition.
