Congressman Josh Gottheimer announced new legislation, the Securing Equal Access to Research, Care, and Health, or SEARCH Act, to help fund new efforts to increase the number of women in clinical research trials, leading to treatments and cures for rare diseases and blood disorders which affect millions of women in New Jersey and across our nation. The legislation is part of Gottheimer’s new, multi-front legislative initiative: “Project Women’s Health.”

Gottheimer’s New Legislation, the Securing Equal Access to Research, Care, and Health or SEARCH Act will:

  • Require the National Institute of Health, or NIH, to produce an action plan within 180 days to highlight the rare disease and health complications that uniquely impact women.
  • Fund recruitment campaigns for women in NIH clinical research trials for rare diseases by increasing advertising at hospitals, doctors’ offices, health centers, and healthcare clinics. This can have a direct and immediate impact on helping Jersey families.
  • Require the CDC and HHS to increase the number of women in federal bleeding disorder programs that provide funding for research, surveillance, prevention, and services through public awareness campaigns.
  • Create a task force between the HHS, NIH, FDA, CMS, and the private sector, including hospitals and labs in New Jersey, to produce a report on the rare diseases that disproportionately impact women, helping ensure more funding goes toward diseases and conditions that impact women.

As Part of New “Pedestrian Safety Strategy,” Gottheimer Announces Federal Investments, Legislation to Keep Pedestrians Safe

Congressman Josh Gottheimer announced a new “Pedestrian Safety Strategy” which includes a three-pronged approach to protecting pedestrians walking across our communities.

Gottheimer’s “Pedestrian Safety Strategy” will:

  • Help ensure towns can afford to invest in upgraded infrastructure by clawing more federal dollars back to North Jersey communities. So far, Gottheimer has clawed back nearly $1.8 million for five federal investments to build new, pedestrian safe infrastructure including safer crosswalks, revitalized sidewalks, and even a pedestrian bridge over a busy road.
  • Support three pieces of legislation Gottheimer is helping lead to protect pedestrians across Jersey and encourage new, safer road designs near schools and in downtowns.
  • Ensure continued collaboration with all levels of government, from our towns and cities to the state and federal government to find new innovative solutions to safer, pedestrian friendly streets.

Gottheimer and Haworth Community Welcome Home Yele Sowore

Congressman Josh Gottheimer joined Haworth local elected officials, community members, and the Sowore family to welcome home Yele Sowore after being detained by the Nigerian government and unable to return back to New Jersey and his family for more than four years.

“After working behind the scenes with the community to help Yele get home, today, after nearly five years, I am so proud to finally say welcome home! During these difficult years, the entire Haworth community has united around the Sowore family and demonstrated what it means to live with Jersey Values, selflessly lending a hand to those in your community who needed help,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5).
