Daily Docket — Monday, April 8

Here are some updates.

  • A Mike Lindell-endorsed candidate is challenging her primary loss for board of supervisors in northern California's Shasta County, alleging that "many illegal ballots" were counted. A hand recount of the election started today.

  • Republican candidates for federal office in New Jersey filed a lawsuit seeking to block the "county line" ballot design for the GOP primaries. A judge previously blocked the controversial design for the Democratic primaries.

  • Former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants asked to appeal a Georgia judge's ruling denying their motion to dismiss the Fulton County election subversion case on First Amendment grounds.

  • A court in Louisiana began trial in a lawsuit filed on behalf of “non-African American” voters challenging the state’s two new majority-Black congressional districts. Plaintiffs claim that the map is racially gerrymandered.

    • The Louisiana Legislature enacted a new congressional map in 2024 after the previous map was struck down for violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. This new lawsuit seeks to block this map.

ICYMI, on Friday, we dropped our latest episode of Defending Democracy where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Marc discuss how the GOP uses gerrymandering to obtain political power, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee's long-term plan for fair maps and their thoughts on the state of democracy.
