** Why and when do we choose to censor ourselves?
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]
With so many of us in lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, some are using the time to do more reading – the classic works that we always meant to read but never had time or the novel recommended by the book club that you started but never got past chapter one.
Now might also be the time to catch up with reading Index on Censorship. Our spring 2020 edition is available now. These unusual times means we are not doing things as we always do. The magazine is available to purchase online at Exact Editions ([link removed]) if you cannot reach your usual place of purchase.
Our new issue focuses on the theme of Complicity because, in 2020, there are multiple powers that like us to give things away – our privacy, our knowledge and even our power to say no.
In this issue, historians Tom Holland, Mary Fulbrook, Serhii Plokhy and Daniel Beer discuss the people from the past who were guilty of complicity.
Turkmen author Ak Welsapar discusses those who got in bed with the old regime and why what’s happening in Turkmenistan now make the Soviet era almost seem like a golden age.
Looking to the future, Mark Frary discusses how we are becoming increasingly complicit with giants like Google and Facebook to gain access to useful tech. But at what cost?
For those who love the feel of a freshly printed magazine, do not despair. We have printed a small, limited edition run and if you would like to get your hands on this rarity, why not make us a donation ([link removed]) ? Let us know that the donation is for a limited edition copy.

Sage Publishing, which publishes Index on Censorship, has created a free microsite on medical science research on Covid-19 ([link removed]) and managing pandemics, and is prioritising publishing open access research on the current pandemic.
** It's more than a health crisis
------------------------------------------------------------

The coronavirus is not just a health crisis, it is also a crisis of information. Fake news is proliferating and governments across the world are starting to act as arbiters of what is true and what is not.
While we recognise that some freedoms have to be restricted in the current pandemic, it is clear some unscrupulous leaders are using it as cover to grab new powers while others are not being open with information that is vital in this time of crisis.
This week, we have joined more than a hundred organisations to urge governments to respect civil liberties as they attempt to tackle the pandemic through digital surveillance technologies ([link removed]) . We have also issued a joint statement to express our profound concerns about the dangers of governments taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to punish independent and critical media ([link removed]) .
Index has been working with scientists to call on Number 10 for greater transparency of information ([link removed]) , at this time when good levels of trustworthy information is vital.
Since we started mapping attacks on media freedom ([link removed]) caused by the current pandemic two and a half weeks ago, our network of activists, human rights observers and journalists have reported 68 incidents. We have heard of reporters being beaten, arrested and their credentials ridiculed or revoked. Report new incidents ([link removed]) .

Khaled Drareni, the Algeria correspondent of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and TV5 Monde and editor of the Casbah Tribune website, has been imprisoned since 29 March on a charge of “inciting an unarmed gathering and endangering national unity.”
Index calls for his immediate release ([link removed]) and the withdrawal of all charges.
Index on Censorship defends people's freedom to express themselves without fear of harm or persecution. We publish censored writers and artists, monitor and campaign against censorship, and encourage debate.
We rely on donations from readers and supporters. By donating ([link removed]) to Index you help us to protect freedom of expression and to support those who are denied that right.
