Supporter,
Today is Right to Read Day and it’s not just another day on the calendar –
it's a vital reminder of the fundamental rights we hold dear: the right to
access information, to explore diverse perspectives, and to think
critically. In today's world, where attempts to censor content in
classrooms and libraries are on the rise, it's more crucial than ever to
stand up for these rights.
Here are five ways you can participate in Right to Read Day:
1. Spread Awareness: Share information about Right to Read Day on your
social media platforms and encourage your friends, family, and
colleagues to join the conversation using the hashtag #RightToReadDay.
2. Support Libraries: Donate books or volunteer at your local library to
support their efforts in providing unrestricted access to information
for all members of the community.
3. [ [link removed] ]Learn More About People For’s Campaigns to Fight Censorship: Every
day we’re fighting attempts to ban books across the nation,
challenging efforts to restrict the teaching of truth about racism in
our history and institutions, and supporting school board members and
other public officials who are under attack for supporting the ability
to read and learn without restrictions.
4. [ [link removed] ]Read One of the Books Most Frequently Challenged in 2023: Our
friends at the American Library Association (ALA) have compiled a list
of the books most frequently targeted for censorship or banning in
2023. We encourage you to read one of these books (or listen as an
audiobook!) as an act of resistance to censorship and support for
literature!
5. [ [link removed] ]Book Banning Near You? Report It! The ALA has a helpful tool for
you to report book bans that may be taking place in your community.
Once they have a chance to review your report, their Office of
Intellectual Freedom (OIF) will be in contact to offer assistance and
support if needed.
Right to Read Day serves as a rallying cry to push back against attempts
to censor content and to reaffirm our dedication to promoting a culture of
inclusivity, critical thinking, and open-mindedness. Together, we can make
a difference in protecting the right to read for generations to come.
Thank you for your unwavering support, and let's celebrate Right to Read
Day with pride and determination!
