Y'all, let’s have a quick chat about my primary opponent George Latimer.
Basically, an investigative report just came out showing that Latimer has been taking donations from private, for-profit companies for county jails for YEARS as Westchester County Executive.
Excuse me?
– Even after one company ignored an inmate’s heart attack symptoms and left him to die in his cell.
– Even after the public called on Latimer to cut ties with the negligent prison healthcare firm.
– And even after the guards and detainees continued to make formal complaints about the poor quality of medical services and food…
He continued to renew contracts with these private companies, to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.
All after they made significant contributions to his campaign.
How can we trust a pay-to-play politician like Latimer to lead us in reforming the criminal justice system? How can we trust that he means what he says, when he has these private companies whispering in his ear? How can we trust him at all as a leader?
The answer is simple — we can’t.
I’m running for re-election to build on the progress we’ve made in mending our broken criminal justice system in NY-16 — and that includes stopping private companies from profiting off of mass incarceration, banning the construction of new jails and prisons, and ending excessive sentencing and mandatory minimums.
