John,
Finally, the Kansas Legislature has adjourned its regular session. Of all the bad bills we’ve been tracking, only House Bill 2749, invasive abortion reporting requirements, has passed both chambers and awaits Governor Kelly’s veto. House Bill 2653, giving fetuses legal rights through child support law, may yet pass during the “veto session,” when legislators return on April 29.
That none of the other seven abortion restrictions proposed this session passed is in large part thanks to you. Let’s be clear: extreme anti-abortion politicians want to undo our 2022 vote. They’ll keep chipping away at the right to abortion in any way they can, as long as they’re in office. But your vocal opposition and constant reminders that abortion rights are popular made the difference. Thank you!
Our work isn’t done, though. As we move toward the veto session, which will likely begin on April 29, we’re all charged with ensuring Governor Kelly’s vetos of anti-abortion legislation aren’t overturned by a 2/3 vote of the legislature. That’s why we need you to join our friends at Vote Neigh, URGE: Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity, Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, and Trust Women for an Abortion Defense Phone Bank today, the 15th, and/or the 22nd.
We’ll be pausing our Monday emails until the 29th, but we’ll be in touch with any breaking news or calls to action between now and then.
Ad Astra Per Aspera,
Kansans for Constitutional Freedom
