It's hard to know whether to laugh or scream, John.
The CEO of Exxon, the largest publicly traded oil company, blamed the public for climate targets not being met, saying on the record that:
“We have opportunities to make fuels with lower carbon in it, but people aren’t willing to spend the money to do that.”1
If anyone isn't willing to spend the money to transition our economy off of fossil fuels, it's Exxon. They are pushing ahead with aggressive fossil fuel-expansion plans while basking in record profits.
It's time for President Biden to step in and say enough is enough.
This is just the latest ploy in Exxon’s decade-long playbook to deny climate change and their role in it.
For decades they knew the risk of burning fossil fuels, but overtly misled the public about those dangers. They’ve also spent millions of dollars on lobbying and advertising, with the goal to make all of us more reliant on fossil fuels so they can make even more money.2
Now, when the risks can no longer be denied, they’re trying to remove any responsibility and blame the public instead, while pocketing the profits from the status quo. It must end.
We have an opportunity to pressure the Biden Administration to put a stop to Exxon’s fossil fuel expansion plans.
President Biden’s Administration has recently made a significant stand against fossil fuels, pausing approval of liquified natural gas (LNG) export terminals.3 Now, we must go one step further and make this pause permanent.
Hundreds of calls and messages right now will help keep the pressure on in this crucial moment when momentum is on our side.
Thank you for taking action.
