Dear John,

Yesterday, our friends at City Church Chicago held their Second Chance Sunday service. Pastor Kent Munsey shared a powerful message on redemption and second chances, reminding everyone of the beauty of the Gospel—the second chance we have in Christ. (

Pastor Kent urged us to remember that those impacted by incarceration are not “them,” some group far away. The opportunity to welcome those impacted by incarceration is right here in our churches and communities, as many people around us may have a criminal record or a loved one behind bars. Every person has immeasurable worth, regardless of their past. Just as Christ offers us a second chance, we can offer a second chance to others.

Prison Fellowship launched the first

Second Chance Month effort back in 2017, and it has grown into a national movement. My hope is that more churches will take the lead on this opportunity to demonstrate the holistic Gospel message and be a consistent witness to our culture. We serve a God who redeems and restores, and the Church is uniquely positioned to love and serve those impacted by incarceration. And as the Body of Christ steps into that calling, we’re going to experience His hope anew, together with our brothers and sisters behind bars!

I was so encouraged by a recent survey by Lifeway and the Correctional Ministries and Chaplains Association (CMCA). Nearly 75% percent of people reported that they believe prison ministry is the responsibility of the local church. Strong interest in and openness to prison ministry were expressed. They reported a shared belief that incarcerated men and women have significant value to offer in understanding the Gospel and in blessing those who participate in prison ministry.

This month, more than 850 churches and organizations have come alongside us as official Second Chance Month partners! Here are some ways your church can get involved:
