I’ve told my daughters that I want on my tombstone to read: “He did his best to make the country’s greatness accessible and affordable for all of its citizens.” I wake up every day trying to figure out what I can do to fulfill that.
I’ve been doing this work for a long time, John -- ever since I led my local youth NAACP chapter at 12 years old.
From organizing demonstrations at segregated businesses during the Civil Rights Movement to my work today in Congress -- including securing access to clean drinking water; improving our roads, bridges, and other infrastructure; and creating good-paying jobs -- I’ve always sought to lift up communities that have historically been left out of the decision-making process.
John, we’ve made great progress -- but we’re not done yet.
There are forces at work today that are threatening everything that our country stands for, John. I believe that if President Biden had not won in 2020, we wouldn’t recognize our country today. And if President Biden doesn’t win re-election this year, I believe our democracy is seriously at risk.
I was proud to boost President Biden’s campaign during the 2020 presidential primaries, and I’m proud to serve as National Co-chair for his 2024 campaign. I’ve spent hours upon hours with the President and his staff working on what we need to do to make sure he wins this election
I’m not in this fight simply to ensure President Biden and Democrats win -- I’m in it for all Americans and for the greater good of our country.
In the coming months, we must organize to save our country from Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans who want to set back progress and take away our rights -- from voting rights to reproductive freedom.
