Montana Senate candidate Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL and one of GOP's star recruits of the 2024 election cycle, admitted that he lied to a National Park Service ranger about being shot during a 2015 incident at the state's Glacier National Park. The MAGA-backed Republican has given inconsistent statements about how he was shot in his right arm. At the time of the park incident, he told a ranger the wound was from his own Colt .45 accidentally firing and was subsequently charged for discharging a firearm in a national park. Sheehy now claims the injury resulted from a 2012 incident in Afghanistan and has taken to talking up his toughness on the campaign trail, citing the "combat" wound as evidence. It smells fishy because it is fishy.

Nearly half of US prisons draw water from sources likely contaminated with toxic PFAS "forever chemicals," alarming new research finds. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a class of about 15,000 chemicals often used to make products resistant to water, stains, and heat. They are called "forever chemicals" because they do not naturally break down, and are linked to cancer, liver problems, thyroid issues, birth defects, kidney disease, decreased immunity, and other serious health problems. Approximately one million people in the US — including 13,000 juveniles — are estimated to be housed in prisons with compromised water sources, and they are especially vulnerable to the dangerous chemicals because there is little they can do to protect themselves, said Nicholas Shapiro, a study co-author at the University of California in Los Angeles. Furthermore, the nation’s prison population is generally in poorer health than the non-incarcerated population, and — stop us if you've heard this before — the issue disproportionately threatens people of color and people with lower incomes, Shapiro noted.
