Basically we are where we're at because Republicans kept pushing that
rugged American individualism crap to justify NOT having a social
democratic arrangement of our society like everybody else in the
developed world. If they keep up with this and cause this country to
f**k up the response to the next pandemic or the next wave to this one
then all other nations may choose to close their borders to us and not
have any trade with us. Of course the US will act out if that happens.

The richest country in the world, skimping on emergency materials and
denying the magnitude and extension of the pandemic crisis, delaying
aid to states who are not consonant to the policies of this
administration, blaming and lying continuously about actions being
taken, meanwhile trying to down play and calling for a return to work
and opening an economy that is affected by the pandemic, clearly
showing a loss of empathy/connection with an ongoing crisis, because
the rich/industrialist are not increasing their profits. Now they are
trying to sneak a bail -out for themselves.

Its very strange that a plague hits the nation so near elections,
where this could disrupt the voting and be utilized to control,
similar to gerrymanding areas that could be against them. The
leadership is completely inoperant, constantly double speaking, lying
and trying to downplay the crisis.-Moscow Mitch is giving the
impression of a Republican victory on the aid bill, that showed a
underground aid to the big industrialists with no follow-up and
inquiry as to where these funds are going to be used. we are watching
the parties involved, if you sell your souls to the money making
mafias. You will see the results in the at the voting polls.!!!!!!!!!!

RE: THE CASE FOR A RENT MORATORIUM

Here in British Columbia, Canada, the BC government under 'Emergency
Orders' have made it law, that renters out of work due to the Covid-19
virus, need not pay their rent, can apply for $500 per month subsidy,
can not be evicted and if their rental home is sold, can not be
evicted by the new buyer  . . . until such time as the Emergency
Order is lifted.

RE: VIETNAM, COVID-19 AND PUBLIC HEALTH

Vietnam has had only 141 cases of COVID-19 until March 23th and, so
far, no death. Despite its proximity to China, and with fewer
resources than countries like Singapore, the country seems to have
kept the virus under control.

This is how Vietnam is handling the pandemic - very successful so far.
Lots of lessons for the rest of the world, particularly the U.S. on
what a real public health system could be.

Vietnam is very densely populated, especially the fast-growing cities.
Today Vietnam's population is the fastest growing in the world,
according to both the UN and the WHO.  In 1970 at the of the Vietnam
War (or as the Vietnamese refer to it, the American War), the
population of both Vietnams was 49 million. Five million Vietnamese
were killed during the war - 10% of the total population. Today the
population of the country is 95 million.

     =====

My experiences while in Vietnam were that the ethic of community is
very strong and reaches deep and wide through out the society, culture
and economy in spite of encroaching capital due to mixed economy.

We saw the people respond to several serious climate/weather related
crises as military (everyone gets military training which not only
includes weapons but also medical skills), people's organizations (
Women's Union local groups are everywhere in both urban and rural
areas as are youth, Agent Orange and other country-wide organizations)
and CP members mobilized right down to block and neighborhood levels
to provide food, health care, "social encouragement" as well as
physical labor.

Within a matter of HOURS, students at the university where we taught
planned and organized blood drives and volunteer teams to participate
as part of a COORDINATED local mobilization.

Because there is still a planned economy and a CP, planning skills and
practices and infrastructure exist.

It ain't perfect, but it sure impressed the hell out of us and clearly
increased COMMUNITY safety and health during several crises as we
watched -- and got to participate as volunteers.

Now him telling Cuomo that he doesn't think he will need 30,000

doesn't think the general will need the number of RPGs he's asking

RE: AMERICANS' REVULSION FOR TRUMP IS UNDERAPPRECIATED

But the difference between the Democratic victories in 2018 and the
presidential election in 2016 (and the upcoming 2020 election) is the
Electoral College. All the other contests are determined by the
popular vote. The presidency, highest office in the land, is
determined by the Electoral College. That's state-by-state
winner-take-all. If the president were elected by popular vote, Trump
would have lost in 2016. We have to be very careful this time around.
Absent getting rid of the E.C., or amending the way it works, we have
the hurdle of making sure Trump loses even the Electoral College.

RE: `BERNIE HAS A REAL DECISION TO MAKE': LABOR THROWS IN WITH BIDEN

Another reason for Bernie to stay in is that over half the states
haven't voted yet.  Just because Biden  is the frontrunner doesn't
mean Bernie can't turn the primary around.  Biden has been nowhere to
be seen during the coronavirus pandemic.  Bernie has raised $2
million dollars for victims and has held nightly medical seminars
online.  Biden saying he won't participate in the final debate is the
same arrogance we saw from Hillary in 2016.  Run Bernie Run!

Lew Grupper

RE: REALITY HAS ENDORSED BERNIE SANDERS

I agree with your Reality endorses Bernie Sanders article.

Midway through the Democratic pre-corona virus steeplechase it became
obvious that the Wall Street 'ownership' of the Party would be seeking
in  Mr. Biden or some other candidate someone who, if he won, would
govern in a conciliatory and compromising  way with their brothers
who owned the Republican Party. If Biden or someone like him is
nominated, Mr. Trump will be reelected. Not because the Bernie Sanders
folks won't come out to vote for the candidate, but because millions
of Americans who hoped that a reborn Franklin D. Roosevelt was
running, whether male or female, will stay home because the same old
Wall Street gang has crushed their hopes for change. It will be the
Democratic 'bosses' who will offend millions of voters, and the
election losses to follow will permit the Republicans to gain back the
seats they won in 2018, and Trump will have everything he wants and
needs. If only we could awaken the true Democrats in time to force the
selection of  Bernie or Warren or both, we would be able to forestall
the immense tragedy that awaits us.

David Alman,
Wasilla, Alaska

     =====

With reference to "Reality Has Endorsed Bernie Sanders": Nino
Pagliccia, writing in Counterpunch, quotes Gramsci: "I am reminded of
political theorist Antonio Gramsci's words: 'The crisis consists
precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be
born; in this interregnum a great variety of morbid symptoms
appear.'"

To my mind, Gramsci beautifully (and presciently) describes the
current situation in the United States. It is abundantly clear that
Medicare for All ought to replace a system where laid-off workers lose
their health insurance. But it is equally clear that Bernie wasn't
able to mount the kind of campaign able to attract the overwhelming
turnout he needed to make his candidacy triumph over the forces of
stagnation in control of the Democratic Party hierarchy.

So we're left with proto-fascistic Trumpian, and corporate Democratic,
morbidity.

REV. JOSEPH LOWERY  -  A POEM IN TRIBUTE BY STEWART ACUFF

Like a message from the heavens

Thunder exploded and broke open the night

Rain came as a wave breaking

The blues were waiting on my waking

The Reverend Doctor Joseph Lowery went on to glory last night

Prophet and powerful preacher

Civil rights leader throughout his life

Once President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference

A giant for justice with his mission of mercy

He honored me with wisdom and love in his coalition of compassion

He hated poverty with a righteous passion

But loved the poor and vulnerable with his whole heart

The daily struggle of the working poor consumed him

Preaching the love of Jesus with the justice of Jeremiah and Isaiah

Teaching me as we marched and rallied, sat down and sat in

Never giving in to evil or racism or oppression of the poor

Rest now, Leader, your work continues in our never ending efforts.

On Monday March 30, 2020, hundreds of organizers joined us to connect
digitally and learn about grassroots campaigns fighting to get people
free from cages during the COVID-19 health crisis. We learned so much
from the speakers and their collective organizing efforts, and are
excited to share this video and the list of resources shared and
mentioned, as well as some more gathered in the last 24 hours on
relevant organizing.

We hope they can help inform and inspire local organizing and a strong
national movement for abolition in these dire times.

Critical Resistance Portland (CR PDX) invites you to the digital book
release event for _Those Who Know Don’t Say: The Nation of Islam,
the Black Freedom Movement, and the Carceral State,_ featuring author
and abolitionist educator Garrett Felber in conversation with Portland
educator Anoop Mirpuri and CR PDX's Marcus Carter.

This book explores how state repression laid the groundwork for the
modern carceral state and uplifts how Muslim organizing paved the way
for the contemporary prison abolition movement. We look forward to a
rich discussion with Felber and Mirpuri about the legacy of this
resistance and its impact on our contemporary abolitionist
movements.

About the Speakers:

ANOOP MIRPURI is an associate professor of English and affiliate
faculty in the Black Studies Department and the School of Gender,
Race, and Nations at Portland State University. He has published
essays on policing, race, and prison growth in journals such
as _Cultural Critique, Critical Ethnic Studies, Oregon Humanities_,
as well as in anthologies including _The Punitive Turn: New
Approaches to Race and Incarceration _and _Commodified and
Criminalized: New Racism and African Americans in Contemporary
Sports_. He is currently writing a book about neoliberalism, mass
criminalization, and the construction of the prisoner's voice in U.S.
public culture.

GARRETT FELBER is an assistant professor of History at the University
of Mississippi. His research and teaching focus on twentieth-century
African American social movements, Black radicalism, and the carceral
state. Felber was the lead organizer of the Making and Unmaking Mass
