Dear  john ,

I hope that you and your family enjoyed a beautiful Easter weekend last week. I think I speak for most of us when I say we were rooting for the NC State Wolfpack to go all the way in both the men's and women's leagues. Unfortunately, it was not to be - here's hoping that next year, we have North Carolina teams in both championships!

Unlike our esteemed Vice President, you likely already know that women’s basketball brackets were “allowed” well before 2022. Yikes!

OOPS: Women’s college basketball not “allowed to have brackets until 2022,” says Kamala Harris in North Carolina

Congress will return to Washington this upcoming week, and I’ll be sure to keep you updated via social media and this newsletter.

Get a Warrant!

This upcoming week, we will likely see the return of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) legislation to the House floor.

This mass surveillance authority is regularly abused by the Intelligence Community to spy on Americans – most famously, on then-candidate Trump in 2016 – in total violation of the Fourth Amendment.

In fact, in 2022 the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court issued a report detailing major violations of the law surrounding the FBI’s ability to query, or search, the Section 702 database. In all, the FISC identified “278,000 non-compliant queries...of raw FISA-acquired information."

My demand is simple – authorities must get a warrant, as they are required to for any other search, if they wish to gain access to Americans’ communications. The American people expect their government to protect them against foreign threats, not to abuse their power to go after American citizens.

SUE for Immigration Act

Last month, I introduced the Standing Up to the Executive Branch for Immigration Enforcement Act (The SUE for Immigration Enforcement Act) with my friend and colleague, Rep. Chip Roy, to give state Attorneys General the ability to sue the federal government if DC bureaucrats refuse to enforce our nation’s immigration laws.

As I said at the time - President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas are pursuing a disastrous open borders policy at any cost, including repeatedly and flagrantly violating federal immigration law.

In the face of this administration’s relentless pursuit of lawlessness, chaos, and destruction, it’s imperative that Congress support states as they stand in the breach in defense of our sovereignty.

In the coming weeks, we expect the House to vote on this critical legislation as a stand-alone bill. As you may remember, the SUE Act already passed the House as part of the Laken Riley Act earlier this year. I hope to see this legislation pass expeditiously and receive Senate action.

Weaponization Symposium

I’m honored to be speaking at the Heritage Foundation’s Weaponization Symposium on Tuesday. Our freedoms and the rule of law are under attack by a weaponized federal government, and I’ll be joining many important voices to share how we’re fighting back against the ideological weaponization of American institutions.

Celebrating Veterans

Last week, Team Bishop was honored to attend the 100th birthday celebration for WWII veteran Lt. Col. Bob Lowdermilk in Mt. Gilead to wish him a happy birthday and share our immense gratitude for his service.

Lt. Col. Lowdermilk was born in the same house in Mt. Gilead that he lives in today. He served admirably in the Pacific theater in the Army Air Corps. Of the roughly 16 million Americans who served in WWII, only around 119,000 are still living today. It was our honor to celebrate with him and the community! You can read more about him here:

Art Competition

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent nationwide and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and each Congressman selects a winner. Winners are recognized both in our district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Artwork submissions are due to one of our district offices by April 12, 2024.
