“Earth’s Moon is about 1/ 400th the diameter of the Sun, but it is also 1/ 400th as far from us, making the Sun and the Moon the same size on the sky—a coincidence not shared by any other planet–moon combination in the solar system, allowing for uniquely photogenic total solar eclipses.”

- Neil deGrasse Tyson

** Hurry Up and Wait
------------------------------------------------------------

This week, we finally saw the legislative productivity we've been waiting for as we voted on a significant number of bills. It also came with the customary controversy and a dash of religious overreach. (No, the Ten Commandments should not be posted in classrooms.) Sadly, there were more than a few instances of anti-LGBTQ+ dialogue and policy. It continues to disappoint me that we have to go through this willfully ignorant cycle of discrimination at the harmful expense of our friends and family’s well-being. Especially when we have real pressing issues to address like our budget, climate, and housing crises. The hours we spend debating extremist ideologies would be much better devoted to ways that improve people’s lives in this state.

I do want to highlight the topic of tipping and minimum wage, as two competing stances may be headed to the ballot this year. SCR 1040, the ‘Tipped Wages Protection Act’ is being run by the Arizona Restaurant Association and aims to allow an employer to pay tipped workers up to 25% less than minimum wage if they can show that the employee made minimum wage plus $2 for all hours worked. The non-profit organization One Fair Wage is gathering signatures for a measure asking voters to raise the state's minimum wage to $18 an hour for all workers, even those who receive tips.

The minimum wage in Arizona increased at the start of this year going from $13.85 to $14.35/hour. SCR1040 is headed back to the Senate and if passed, it may be on the ballot along with One Fair Wage’s initiative. Start thinking through which you may cast your vote for and let me know what you think of the two.

The legislature adjourned for another break as we will gavel in only on Wednesday for the next two weeks. You will find me in the community and on the campaign trail while away from the Capitol.

With appreciation,

Sarah

** Reproductive Rights Lens
------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Kris Mayes hosted a Women for Biden event where they highlighted the importance of voting for abortion care in this upcoming election. As a survivor of assault, Governor Whitmer reminded everyone that it is important to make sure we keep speaking up and sharing our stories on this issue to ensure our children grow up with the same rights our parents had.

Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona came to the Capitol and organized a great day of advocacy. We celebrated the success of the signature-gathering efforts for the abortion ballot initiative and discussed the importance of protecting reproductive healthcare and access to contraception.

** One To Follow - The Great North American Eclipse
------------------------------------------------------------

On Monday, the total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean, passing over Mexico, the United States, and into Canada. 32 million people in the US will be along the path of full totality, meaning the moon’s shadow will completely cover the sun. The total eclipse will be visible for 3.5 - 4 minutes for those in the direct path.

Grab your pair of safety glasses and wander outside around 11:15 am tomorrow to see it, because the U.S. won’t be in the solar eclipse path for another twenty years!

I am an Arizona Wildcat through and through, but must admit I am a BIG fan of the ASU Young Democrats. Representative Lorena Austin and I were lucky enough to join them on campus at their weekly Friday meeting and we had so much fun! My ‘Old Dems’ team lost badly to the Young Dems in trivia because we could not keep up with their pop culture and political savviness.

The ASU Young Dems are actively advocating and using their voices to push for positive solutions to the most important issues we face. I can’t wait to watch them continue to grow into our future leaders!
